EAP Case Study: University of Liverpool

Written by HealthHero | Dec 12, 2024

The challenge:

As long-time advocates of health and wellbeing, the University of Liverpool sought an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) that would help their team wherever they were on their health and wellbeing journey. Their goal was to establish a well-rounded service that would engage their team to proactively manage their wellbeing, and provide employees with immediate access to emotional support when required.

The HealthHero solution:

In-the-moment-support and structured counselling

In 2016, The University of Liverpool partnered with HealthHero to support their goal of enhancing their culture of health and wellbeing, through an accessible, flexible, high-quality EAP.

HealthHero now provides convenient access to gold-standard mental health support from our team of accredited, qualified, and experienced counsellors. The University's employees can access single-session, in-the-moment support through our support line, 24/7, 365 days a year

Depending on clinical appropriateness as measured during a clinical assessment, HealthHero also offers scheduled, structured counselling sessions, which can be conducted virtually, telephonically, or in person

Non-clinical support

In addition to counselling, the university's employees also have access to non-clinical support services, including:

  • A legal advice support line - where users can have their legal questions answered by a team of trained lawyers.
  • A money and debt support line gives access to professionals who can assist with financial advice, e.g., budgeting and income maximisation.
  • A coaching/manager support line - this offers those in a supportive role an opportunity to assist their team members better e.g. guiding them to resources to help facilitate a difficult conversation

Self-serve Wellbeing Hub

The University of Liverpool's community of employees also have access to HealthHero's Wellbeing Hub online portal, where they can proactively manage their health and wellbeing. Here, they can book a call back with a counsellor, access the award-winning online Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) platform "Living Life to the Full", and browse a wide array of clinically validated articles and resources we provide to help with their wellbeing journey.

Users also receive monthly newsletters which include topical articles around upcoming awareness days, and can browse tailored menus to learn more about the available support services.

The impact

The service has been well received since its inception in 2016, and today supports a network of over 7300 employees.

HealthHero has proactively supported The University of Liverpool to promote the service, which has resulted in excellent engagement levels. HealthHero delivers 2-3 virtual information sessions annually for attendees to learn more about the service and what they can access via their EAP. It also provides targeted sessions for managers, team members and research staff. Our account manager also attends their annual Wellbeing event. As a result, the university's employees are highly active on HealthHero's Wellbeing Hub portal, with 63 new accounts created in the last reporting period (September – November 2024).

The University of Liverpool has also availed of timely and professional interventions during times of need. HealthHero's Critical Incident team has gone onsite on short notice at various university locations to assist team members directly impacted by traumatic events involving students and staff. The feedback received following these instances of support has been overwhelmingly positive.
